AHFS Drug Information Integrated into PEPID

We are pleased to announce we’ve expanded our partnership with the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), the premier provider of drug information. This partnership puts the AHFS Essentials drug information in electronic format, delivered on any mobile device or within any EMR system and integrated into PEPID’s clinical content, dosing calculators and lab manual. The 2011 AHFS Essentials is the best selling source of comprehensive drug data available for healthcare professionals today.

“We are excited to deliver AHFS for the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists,” said John Wagner, PEPID President. “PEPID’s mobile and system integration expertise on all platforms makes this drug information easily accessible to pharmacists nationwide.”

Top 100 Hospitals, Did Yours Make the List?

HospitalsA recent survey was released identifying the top 100 hospitals in the US. The list is determined by factors that went into a study of objective research measuring hospitals on the following criteria; overall organization performance including patient care, operational efficiency and financial stability. The survey identified almost 3,000 US hospitals and awarded just 100 of them as winners.

According to the survey, if all of the 3000 hospitals performed at the same level the top 100 performed, the following may be true;

  • Approx 116,000 additional patients would survive each year
  • Over 197,000 patients complications would be avoided each year
  • The average patients in hospital stay would decrease by half a day
  • Expense per adjusted discharge would drop by $462 (Thomson Reuters, 2011)

Here are the hospitals that topped the list:

There are some great tools out there that can assist hospitals in achieving an accreditation, such as being listed in the top 100 hospitals. With the overall goal being to improve patient care, increase efficiency and reduce costs, PEPID’s medical software can help in all of these areas. Putting medical information in the hands of physicians and nurses through their mobile devices will allow them to more quickly and effectively treat patients, which will in turn improve care and reduce costs. Can Your Patients Afford their Medication?

Have you ever thought to ask your patients if they can afford the medication that you were about to prescribe them? If they have a problem affording their meds, have you thought about other alternatives or ways to help them? A study was done on a group of 1,500 people, 20% of which stated that they could not afford to get and take the medication their doctor had prescribed them.

If patients are unable to get the mediation prescribed to them, the medical problem will go untreated which can create more serious medical problems. These patients are also more likely to require hospitalization, which obviously carries a higher cost. This cost then falls back onto the laps of hospitals and physicians.

It is important that healthcare professionals work with their patients to make sure they get the medications they need. If there are alternative less expensive options for those that may be experiencing money troubles, it is important that they be offered. Physicians who have access to hand held drug databases are easily able to look up various medications, their generics and alternatives as well as cost to learn more about drug databases for physicians and pharmacists, click here

US Government Reveals Hospital Errors

With so many opportunities for error, it is a wonder how hospitals manage to keep a lid on situations where medical errors cause significant problems. Recently the US government released data for the first time, showing how often patients are injured by certain medical errors in hospitals.

The study completed by the US did not take in to account all of the potential errors and their effects; instead it focused on the following:

Hospital Errors

  • Air in bloodstream
  • Falls
  • Bedsores
  • Infusions with the wrong blood type
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Blood infections
  • Uncontrolled blood-sugar levels
  • Foreign objects left in the body after surgery

While officials are not ready to discuss the results of the data, a preliminary analysis suggests that St. Louis area hospitals had lower rates than the national average for these types of hospital mistakes.  Apparently this is good news for St. Louis area hospitals however; they are in agreement that this type of data should not be made public. Hospital officials believe that the methods of calculating error rates paint an “inaccurate and unreliable picture” of hospital quality.

Technology can play a big factor in helping hospitals provide better patient experiences. With electronic medical records there is a less likely chance that paper work and medical records will get mixed up, therefore alleviating part of the risk for medical errors. Clinical Decision Support tools, like those offered by PEPID, can also help physicians become more efficient, by helping them reach a diagnosis and treatment option more quickly and with ease. This allows the physician to focus time and attention elsewhere.

PEPID offers a wide range of Health IT platforms designed to increase physician’s effectiveness and become more efficient. To learn more about what PEPID has to offer visit PEPID.com or PEPIDKnowledgeBase.com.

Physician’s Use of Mobile Devices is on the Rise

A recent study was done that shows “mobile consumption of medical news” has increased 45% between June 1, 2010 and February 28, 2011. The study was done by Bulletin Healthcare and they were able to gauge the method in which physicians accessed the medical information.

Based on data from this study, it shows that a wide majority of Physicians prefer Apple Devices, with more than a 90% share in the results. The iPhone usage declined from 86% to 79%, while the iPad picked up steam and doubled from 8% to 14%. Android is a minority in physician use; however they have managed to double their share between June and February.

As physicians continue to use their mobile devices more and more for medical purposes, the applications on these devices continue to meet more needs of the physician than they ever thought possible. PEPID offers a wide variety of medical suites for physician’s mobile devices. Just to name a few there is the Emergency Physician Suite, Primary Care Plus, Professional Nursing Suite and much more. Some of the features included with subscription to PEPID on your mobile device are:

  • Specialized Clinical Content
