PEPID Releases Version 8.0

PEPID has started to alert all of its subscribers, by email, that the latest updates for their decision support resources are being released. Version 8.0 is now available and ready for downloading by those subscribers using PDA software. (Some platforms, like PEPID Online and mobile wireless, are automatically updated.) As in all previous releases, Version 8.0 includes significant content expansion and performance enhancements for the entire PEPID product line.

For PEPID™ Emergency Physician Suite users, Version 8.0 continues to expand the most comprehensive emergency medicine available for handhelds and online. Trauma Section coverage now includes Trauma and resuscitation basics; the ballistics of gunshot, stab, and blast wounds, Primary and secondary ATLS surveys.

PEPID™ Primary Care Plus Ambulatory and Hospital Care (PCP) and Clinical Rotation Companion (CRC) suites continue to answer more of the questions you face every day with the best EBM available. Expanded Clinical Inquiries™ and Help-Desk Answers™ in PEPID PCP and CRC from the prestigious Family Physicians Inquiries Network™ (FPIN) include new Adult Trauma and Methodology sections, and expanded Pediatrics and Women's Health coverage.

All PEPID™ RN suites feature expanded nursing focused drug coverage for Version 8.0 with Nursing Considerations for NSAIDS and Narcotics. Nursing Considerations, first introduced with the release of Version 7.2, provide a review of pre-administration procedures and cautions for each drug. Administration information includes alternative procedures, alerts and patient monitoring.

The expanded Assessment Section in PEPID™ EMS Plus NAEMSE now includes Pre-hospital Neurologic Examination, and Stroke Assessment with illustrated Cincinnati Pre-hospital Stroke Screen and NIH Stroke Scale. Signs and Symptoms expansion includes Pediatric Behavioral/Psychiatric Crisis. There is also new Provider Wellness section with coverage of Stress Management Strategies, including Acute Stress and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

New medical calculators provide instant access to tools that simplify pediatric risk assessment, and help you perform quick alcohol and drug use tests. Version 8.0 adds thirteen new drug, antidote, and herbal monographs. New indications and dosing forms assure that you always have the most up-to-date pharmaceutical content. New procedural illustrations include tube thoracostomy, and subclavian vein access.  Clinical anatomy imagery now includes expanded Abdomen, Skeleton and Pelvis & Hip coverage.

Concurrent with the release of 8.0, PEPID has launched new wireless installation service for compatible Palm® handheld devices, Palm OS Treo™ and BlackBerry® smartphones. This over-the-air (OTA) capability dramatically reduces the time required to install PEPID knowledge tools, allowing our customers to access to current point-of-care reference information more quickly than ever.

Who Needs to Update

Not all subscribers need to update their PEPID. The content of PEPID™ Online and PEPID™ Mobile is continually updated. To learn how to check the current version installed on your device, see the accompanying "Using PEPID" article in this issue of PEPID Informer.

PEPID™ OnCard Program subscribers need to install using their Version 8.0 memory card to stay current.  Owners of OTA compatible Palm® handheld devices, Palm OS Treo™ and BlackBerry® smartphones may be able to update over-the-air. Other PDA software users will need to sync their handheld to a PC or Mac to update to Version 8.0.

Staying current is vital to promoting a safer workplace and improved quality of care.

PEPID to Integrate Stedman's

This year, PEPID medical information resources will be enhanced by The Best Words in Medicine™. PEPID has announced a licensing agreement with Wolters Kluwer Health/Lippincott Williams & Wilkins of Baltimore, Maryland, publisher of Stedman's Medical Dictionary, 28th Edition. Under the terms of the agreement, terminology from Stedman's Medical Dictionary (28th Edition) will be used to enhance the clinical use and educational value of PEPID medical information resources for handheld and online devices.

For decades, Stedman's has been synonymous with the highest quality medical terminology. The firm's dictionary is one of the most widely used by health care professionals and students. PEPID will integrate terminology that substantially increases the utility of PEPID for clinicians working at the point of care. As a result, our subscribers will get even more capable decision-support.

The addition of Stedman's terminology is a result of PEPID's ongoing commitment to provide caregivers with ever more capable information resources for increased workplace safety and improved quality of care for everyone.
