Evanston, Illinois, June 28, 2002—PEPID LLC, the premier developer of handheld decision-support tools for the medical community, today announced that its proprietary product, PEPID ED, will be used by the entire fleet of Holland America Line and Windstar Cruises to assist ship doctors in providing optimal medical care for patients.
The medical departments of Holland America Line and Windstar Cruises deal on a daily basis with health emergencies worldwide, often in remote locations where standard medical care is unavailable. Approximately 100,000 patient visits occur annually on board these ships.
PEPID ED is a comprehensive, interactive physician reference tool which provides instant access to critical information for emergency situations. This database is downloadable onto all PDAs and PCs, making critical information available at the fingertips of medical personnel—where they need it, when they need it. PEPID ED is compatible with all handheld computer platforms and has the power to improve point-of-care decisions and reduce medical errors. It is the ultimate portable medical and drug reference tool that provides the unparalleled breadth and depth of knowledge and immediate recall that physicians need for their decision-making. Its database includes more than 1600 disease and trauma presentations and over 1500 drugs with complete dosing and prescribing information, adverse drug reactions, contraindications, interactions, kinetics, and overdose management.
Carter Hill, MD, Medical Director, Holland America Line and Windstar Cruises, said, "We continually look at ways to be able to share up-to-date and current medical information for these medical facilities that is consistent, regularly updated, and can be used as a standard." He continues, "In our medical department, we have used PEPID as a reliable and current source of information when communicating with ships often in remote settings. Each ship will now have its own PEPID program with hand-held PDAs so that we can continue to coordinate communications and use a standard platform all through the fleet."
The program was developed in 1994 when a team of 35 medical and pharmaceutical professionals came together and created the first version of PEPID specifically for emergency physicians, now called PEPID ED. PEPID ED was then field-tested in emergency departments for more than four years as well as by a branch of the U.S. armed forces. The complete line of PEPID products are the result of eight years of an ongoing effort by more than 80 healthcare professionals, all experts in their field.
Dr. Mark Rosenbloom, CEO of PEPID, added, "PEPID's portability empowers ship doctors to deal with real emergencies, and even non-emergencies, while they are happening—giving passengers peace of mind that their health will be well taken care of. This gives the physician mobility and reliability in treating their patients—whether they are in the hospital, the clinic, the heart of Afghanistan…or the middle of the ocean!" He continued, "We're thrilled that Holland America and Windstar Cruises recognize the value PEPID's mobile capability can provide in improving medical care for their patients while at sea."
PEPID, the premier medical and drug reference tool for the PDA, is designed to assist in the reduction of medical errors and improve patient outcomes. PEPID was founded in 1994 by Dr. Mark Rosenbloom, a board-bertified emergency physician at Northwestern University School of Medicine. PEPID covers medical and trauma topics typically encountered in emergency and primary care settings.
